Why Company Culture Plays A Big Role In Talent Acquisition?

For some, company culture is a fanciful phrase, a buzz word for what is basically a policy impacting the mood of a workplace. But culture has a far greater significance, touching almost every aspect of an organisation, including a major role is the effectiveness of a recruitment campaign. So much so, it has become a key to talent acquisition.

Company culture is not about smiling personnel. True, it does relate to creating a working environment that is positive and happy, but it also relates to the company mission, its values and ethics, and its expectations and goals. It sets out the personality of a company, making it critical to their very identity.

As such, there is a strong business purpose to investing both time and resources into promoting. But with the recruitment of talent so important, amongst the most significant benefits of having a strong, impressive company culture is its ability to attract the highest quality candidates to a company.

Talent Loves Company Culture

Research shows that company culture is no small issue when it comes to talent acquisition. In fact, without a clearly defined culture that matches, if not generally aligns with, the values of the candidates, an organisation can find it difficult to recruit or keep the best talent.

Deloitte revealed in 2015 that 87% of organisations cited culture and engagement as one of their top challenges, and little has changed since then.

According to another report, which comprised a survey of 1,000 UK professionals and hiring managers, revealed that 90% of employers see company culture as playing a key role in talent acquisition, and 73% of professionals said they had left a company because of a poor cultural fit.

Not only that, but 90% of professionals said they actively researched the culture of a company before accepting a role there. Of them, 61% admitted to sourcing media articles about the company, and 46% to using online employer rating sites, like Glassdoor.

And it isn’t even a covert exercise, with 68% of professionals asking about company culture during an interview.

Focus On Cultural Fit

It is pretty clear that company culture is pretty high on the agenda for talented candidates – and for employers too. But successful recruitment does not solely depend on attracting the best talent; it also needs to identify the right cultural fit.

Cultural fit means the personal values, goals and practices of an employee are aligned with the company culture. This gives better engagement with colleagues in the work environment.

Cultural fit has a definite impact on employee performance and retention. Get it wrong, and employee turnover will be high, with dissatisfaction common and teams failing to perform as they should. Get it right, and employees will work more enthusiastically, be more motivated and realise their potential more fully.

How To Foster A Strong Company Culture

If the value of a strong company culture is so significant, then how can a company cultivate a culture that can boost talent acquisition? The good news there are some simple steps that HR can take to do so.

  • Have Career Development Policy: Make career development and training opportunities available.
  • Promote Engagement: Create and nurture an innovation-friendly culture where employees feel their ideas will be heard and acted upon.
  • Offer Good Terms: Ensure your company offers attractive, competitive salaries and benefits.
  • Prioritise Employee Workplace Experience: Provide a friendly working environment that staff are happy to be part of.
  • Have Modern Procedures and Technology: Offer tools to help employees do their jobs more effectively.
